After graduating from medical school at the University of Oslo in 1997, Eirik Nestaas finished his specialisation in paediatrics in 2004. Since 2005 he has combined research and clinical work. He completed his PhD in deformation imaging analysis by ultrasound at the University of Oslo in 2010 and finished a postdoctoral project in the same field in 2014. Eirik Nestaas became a postdoctoral research fellow at the Centre for Cardiological Innovation (CCI) in January 2015.

His clinical fields of expertise are paediatric cardiology and neonatology and he currently holds a clinical position as a consultant in cardiology and neonatology at the Department of Paediatrics at the Vestfold Hospital Trust.

Nestaas, MD, PhD research interests have been focused on implementing strain and strain rate analyses in neonatal cardiology, with special interest in improvements of analysis methods and on heart function assessment in asphyxiated neonates and neonates receiving whole-body therapeutic hypothermia for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
