Dr. Sjur Gjerald has joined the CCI at partner Simula Research Laboratory as a Research Programmer. Sjur received his Master of Science in Industrial Mathematics, studying at both NTNU in Trondheim from 2001-2007 (with work abroad at INSA Toulouse, Toulouse, France, 2004-2005). His Master's thesis was entitled "Applications of splitting Methods and exponential Integrators to an electro-chemical Heart Cell Model". Dr. Gjerald then pursued his Ph.D in Medical Technology from NTNU in Trondheim from 2007 - 2012, including work as a visiting scholar at KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium in the winter of 2011. This Spring, Sjur defended his thesis, entitled "A FAST ultrasound simulator", meaning a simulator for training medical personnel in detecting free abdominal fluid a.k.a. the FAST procedure. His recent work includes the proceeding: "Real-time ultrasound simulation using the GPU", IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control vol:59 issue:5 year:2012 pages:885-892. Sjur's current efforts focus on the development of optimal methods and tools for the creation of image-based models from echocardiographic recordings.
